What is HOMA-IR? The Gold Standard for Insulin Resistance
Your fasting glucose may be normal, but that does not mean you are metabolically healthy. HOMA-IR reveals what glucose alone cannot.

Why Fasting Glucose Alone Is Not Enough
Most annual health checkups only measure fasting glucose. If it is below 100 mg/dL, you are told "everything is normal." But this misses a critical window — insulin resistance can develop 5-10 years before glucose rises.
What Is HOMA-IR?
HOMA-IR stands for Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance. It is calculated using a simple formula:
HOMA-IR = (Fasting Glucose × Fasting Insulin) ÷ 405
Where glucose is in mg/dL and insulin is in µIU/mL.
How to Interpret Your HOMA-IR
| HOMA-IR Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 1.0 | Optimal insulin sensitivity |
| 1.0 – 1.9 | Normal range |
| 2.0 – 2.9 | Early insulin resistance |
| ≥ 3.0 | Significant insulin resistance |
Why This Matters
When you eat carbohydrates, your pancreas releases insulin to shuttle glucose into cells. In insulin resistance, cells become "deaf" to insulin's signal. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin — keeping glucose normal but at a metabolic cost.
This hyperinsulinemia drives:
- Weight gain (especially visceral fat)
- Elevated triglycerides
- Fatty liver (NAFLD)
- PCOS in women
- Increased cardiovascular risk
- Accelerated aging
The Hidden Epidemic
Studies suggest 30-40% of Indian adults have some degree of insulin resistance, many undiagnosed because their glucose appears normal.
What To Do If Your HOMA-IR Is Elevated
- Dietary changes: Reduce refined carbohydrates, increase protein and fiber
- Exercise: Both resistance training and walking improve insulin sensitivity
- Sleep: Poor sleep directly worsens insulin resistance
- Supplements: Berberine, magnesium, and omega-3 have evidence for improving HOMA-IR
- Medical review: A metabolic physician can create a targeted protocol
Get Tested
Our Insulin Resistance Test Kit measures both fasting glucose and fasting insulin with HOMA-IR calculation and doctor interpretation — all from a home blood draw.
