Preventive cardiology is a decision-making consultation, not a checklist of scans. The aim is to understand your personal cardiovascular risk and decide what information would change the next step. A normal single reading does not rule out future risk, and more tests are not automatically better.
Start with the risk profile
Bring blood-pressure readings, lipid reports, glucose or HbA1c, kidney results, current prescriptions, smoking history, sleep and activity pattern, and details of premature heart disease in close relatives. Age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease and tobacco exposure all influence the discussion. The treatment goal should be personal rather than copied from a lab’s reference interval.
LDL cholesterol is part of a wider decision
The appropriate LDL-C goal depends on whether someone has established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetes, kidney disease or other high-risk features. A number that is acceptable for one person may be too high for another. Medicines, nutrition, movement and follow-up are discussed together; no online article can choose a prescription or promise a particular result.
When can a calcium score help?
A coronary artery calcium (CAC) score may help refine a prevention decision when risk remains uncertain and the result would change management. It is not a universal screening test, does not show every type of plaque, and does not replace clinical assessment. Ask what decision the scan is meant to answer before booking it.
Why an echocardiogram may be useful
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to assess heart structure, valves and pumping function when symptoms, examination or another test raises a relevant question. It is different from a coronary calcium scan and is not a routine “all clear” test for every healthy person.
What does NT-proBNP tell you?
NT-proBNP is a blood marker that can support evaluation when heart failure is suspected, especially with breathlessness, swelling or reduced exercise tolerance. Results need clinical context because age, kidney function, rhythm problems and body composition can influence the value. It is a decision aid, not a stand-alone diagnosis.
Seek urgent care for emergencies
New or severe chest pain, marked breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking needs urgent local medical evaluation. Do not wait for a preventive appointment.
