A diabetes or prediabetes consultation should answer two practical questions: what do the results mean, and what should be checked or changed next? A plan should be individual. No consultation can promise a particular HbA1c, weight change or “reversal” for every person.

What HbA1c tells you

HbA1c estimates average blood glucose over roughly the previous three months. NIDDK lists 5.7–6.4% as the laboratory range commonly used for prediabetes and 6.5% or higher for diabetes, with diagnosis confirmed using appropriate laboratory testing and clinical context. After diagnosis, many adults are discussed around a goal below 7%, but the safest target depends on age, medicines, hypoglycaemia risk, pregnancy, kidney disease and other health factors. Your target should be agreed with your clinician.

Look beyond glucose

Diabetes care also includes blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney function, urine albumin when appropriate, weight and waist trends, smoking status, sleep and physical activity. These factors affect long-term heart, kidney, eye and nerve risk. A single “normal” glucose result does not replace a joined-up review.

Medicines are part of the plan

Some people need medication from the beginning; others need treatment adjusted over time. Do not stop insulin or another prescribed medicine because of one home reading or an online post. The choice depends on the type of diabetes, current results, other conditions, side effects, access and preferences.

What to bring

Bring recent HbA1c and glucose reports, blood-pressure readings, prescriptions, previous complications or admissions, and a short record of symptoms and daily routine. Further tests should answer a clinical question rather than be added automatically.
